As you might already know there are different types of insurance. Today we are going to talk about General Liability Insurance which is in most cases, the cheapest insurance.

General Liability Insurance, also known as Basic Coverage. It helps pay for the other person's expenses in case you get involved in an accident in which you are at fault. California requires all drivers the following limits 15/30/5 (see below for more information) but why stop there? Some day you might end up needing more than that. You'll know whan you are done reading this article. Purchasing liability auto insurance is the most common and simple way people choose to meet the state requirements.

What does it cover?

Bodily Injury

If you are involved in an at-fault accident this coverage, Bodily Injury Liability, will help pay for the other person's medical expenses.

Property Damage

In case you cause an accident and you damage someone else's property, such as their car or even if you crash into a house or business for some reason, this coverage, Property Damage Liability will help you pay for repairs.

Having this coverage is mandatory in all 50 states but there are different minimum amounts of liability. In this case, the state of California requires the following:

$15,000 for injury or death to one person. (Bodily Injury) $30,000 for injury or death to more than one person. (Bodily Injury) $5000 for damage to property. (Property Damage)

How does it work?

Liability Insurance Coverage Limits

The amount your insurance company will pay for a covered liability insurance claim also depends on the coverage limits you choose. You may decide to get additional coverage but that is entirely up to you. These are the three liability coverage limits on your auto insurance policy:

  • Property Damage Liability Limit. This is the maximum amount your insurance carrier will pay to repair damage you cause to someone else's property. The maximum pay off t will not exceed the limit you set.

  • Bodily Injury Liability Limit per person. This establishes a maximum pay off for each individual who is injured in an accident if you caused it.

  • Bodily Injury Liability Limit per accident. This sets a limit on the total amount that your insurer will pay for all medical expenses other people incur from an accident you cause. It is important to set this limit at a reasonable amount, as it may be needed to help pay for medical expenses incurred by multiple people.

Example: If you were at fault for a crash that injured three individuals in another car. Your bodily injury liability limit per person is $15,000 and your bodily injury limit per accident is $30,000. If ''Individual 1's'' medical bills total is $8,000, ''Individual 2's'' costs $10,000 and ''Individual 3's'' cost $12,000, you're covered, as each individual's bills were under $15,000 (your bodily injury limit per person) and the total cost of injuries is $30,000, which meets your $30,000 bodily injury limit for a single accident. If the costs exceed your liability limits, it is your responsibility, meaning you would have to pay them yourself. That's why it is always a good idea to increase your car liability limits above California's minimum requirements by getting more coverage.

You might have noticed that these limits are actually, generally, not enough. We usually suggest our customers, if they can, to get at least $10,000 for property damage so that instead of paying thousands of dollars for an accident you could cause, you will be paying a couple of dollars more every month.

Basic Car Insurance Cost

The cost of this type of insurance varies from person to person because insurance rates are determined by your age, marital status, driving record, the area you live in, the year, make and model of your car, etc. Even if you have anti-theft devices will get you discounts. There is not one price, we can only tell you, from our personal experience that in most cases, it does not go over $100 a month and the cost of your policy will depend on the following factors:

Driving record How clean your driving record is, is important to determine insurance rates. How prone you are to have an accident or getting a ticket, is determined by your driving record, for example, a person who has never had a ticket will get lower insurance rates than a person that has been pulled over in the last three years for speeding or reckless driving. So if your driving record is not what they would call clean, do not expect to get a $30 monthly policy.

Garaging Address Your insurance rate will also be determined based on how safe the area you live in is, for example, it is cheaper to insure a car in Fresno than insuring a car in North Hollywood. Because Fresno has a lower crime rate than North Hollywood and is generally a safer area.

Type of car Another factor that will determine your insurance rates is the year, make and model of your car, it is usually cheaper to insure older models since newer models are more likely to be stolen. How safe your car is, is another determining factor, how prone it is to have an accident, for example, a middle-sized family sedan is cheaper to insure than a sports car. Because middle-sized sedans are generally driven slower and safer than a sports car, people driving sports cars tend to drive fast and we can't always be too careful.

Age The age of the driver will also affect the insurance rate, considering your driving record as well. A 30 years old person will be cheaper to insure than someone who is over 50 years old or under 21 but there are also discounts you can get if you are a new/teen driver or a senior driver in order to make your insurance rate lower such as driving courses and good grades.
