Types of Car Insurance

Choosing the right insurance for your car is very important, consider what your needs are and what you can afford. There are a lot of coverages that you can get for your policy and here we explain each one of them and answer the most frequent questions asked about insurance:

What does comprehensive insurance cover?

Comprehensive insurance can help you pay for your car's repair, or even help you replace it entirely in the case of a total loss, due to any of the following:

- Falling Objects.

- Car Theft.

- Vandalism.

- Fire.

- Glass Damage.

- Flood.

What is comprehensive coverage?

Comprehensive insurance is an optional auto insurance coverage that protects your car against damage not resulting from a collision, as well as from theft. It covers a wide array of events that can damage your car, including vandalism, fires, and rockslides on twisting mountain roads.

While comprehensive car insurance does provide extremely valuable protections, towing, rental, and personal property coverages aren't among them.

But just because it doesn't cover everything outside of collisions doesn't mean comprehensive insurance isn't valuable.

What does gap insurance cover?

Gap insurance is an optional, add-on car insurance coverage that can help certain drivers cover the “gap” between the amount they owe on their car and the car’s actual cash value (ACV) in the event of an accident. A car’s actual cash value is the car’s monetary value at the time of the accident, not the car’s original price.

The basic concept behind gap insurance is easy enough to understand – but what exactly does it cover? Gap insurance coverage is quite versatile, but be aware that it only covers damage to your vehicle, not other property or bodily injuries resulting from an accident.

What is liability insurance coverage?

Getting into in an accident is never fun. And many times, it’s not something you can prevent. Even if you consider yourself to be an exceptional driver with a crystal-clear driving record, you can’t guarantee how other drivers on the road will behave. This is precisely why liability insurance was created – to protect drivers in the case of an at-fault accident. This is the most affordable car insurance.

Just as the name suggests, liability car insurance will cover damage that you cause to another vehicle or personal property in an at-fault accident. Although bare minimum requirements will allow you to hit the open roads legally, increasing levels of liability protection can provide additional coverage and peace of mind in the unfortunate event of a crash.

LIABILITY CAR INSURANCE WON’T COVER YOUR OWN VEHICLE

Remember, the entire purpose of liability car insurance is to provide you with financial protection and fulfill your legal obligation to pay for the other party’s injuries and/or property damage in an accident. Extended coverage in comprehensive and collision insurance will provide extra protection for your own damages.

What does liability insurance cover?

BODILY INJURY LIABILITY

If you are at fault in an accident that results in injury to the other party, Bodily Injury Liability coverage will kick in. It will pay for the other party’s injury-related expenses to fulfill your legal obligations as the at-fault driver, including medical bills, rehabilitation costs, long-term care, funeral expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and related damages.

PROPERTY DAMAGE LIABILITY

If you are at fault in an accident that damages another party’s property, Property Damage Liability coverage will provide a payout to fulfill your legal obligation. Eligible property damage may include a house, a fence, or a parked car, for example. Property Damage Liability may also pay for legal defense if you are sued for an accident that results in property damage.

What is collision insurance coverage?

Let's start off with a quick definition of collision insurance: collision insurance is a type of auto insurance that can cover you in the event of a crash or accident with another vehicle or object if your car needs to be repaired. Unlike liability insurance, your collision insurance policy kicks in even if you are found at fault. While this collision coverage definition may sound simple enough, collision insurance can apply to a wide range of accident types. Broadly speaking, collision can potentially apply to the following situations:

  • An accident involving only your car, such as rolling over

  • An accident with another object, such as a phone pole or sidewalk

  • An accident with another vehicle, such as a traffic crash or someone hitting your car while it’s parked on the street

Be aware that collision insurance only reimburses you for damage to your car – not for damage to other vehicles or objects, or for bodily injuries sustained in the accident.

What is full coverage auto insurance?

Full coverage can be interpreted in different ways. It is not a specific coverage offered by insurance carriers. Your agent does not hit a full coverage check box on your policy, and you are ready to go. It is a term which has evolved and is well known in the insurance industry, but insurance carriers do not use a laid out set of guidelines which they all follow.

The Core of Full Coverage

State Minimum Requirements Every state in the U.S. can set its own state minimum requirements for auto insurance. The state minimum requirements typically include bodily injury liabilityand property damage.

Comprehensive Comprehensive coverage will cover physical damage for all the things that can happen to your vehicle other than a collision. Full coverage cannot be possible without comprehensive coverage. Fire, theft, vandalism, storm damage, hitting a deer, windshield coverage, and more are covered by comprehensive.

Collision Collision coverage is the coverage that gives you the broadest protection and is always included in full coverage auto insurance. Collision coverage ensures your vehicle will be covered regardless of what causes the damage. Collision covers damage for all accidents and since collision cannot be purchased without comprehensive coverage anything other than an accident will still be covered.

What is no fault insurance?

No-fault insurance coverage, or personal injury protection (PIP), is offered in states with no-fault laws to cover injuries to the policyholder resulting from an accident.

PIP is optional. When you have PIP coverage, your own insurance company pays for:

  • Qualifying medical injuries.

  • Lost wages after an accident, whether or not you caused it.

  • Funeral expenses.

It's important to note that PIP insurance doesn't replace liability insurance; it is offered in addition to it in no-fault. Your liability insurance will cover damages to another person's vehicle when you cause an accident.

When your injuries exceed your PIP limits, you may be able to collect from the at-fault driver's liability insurance for the additional costs.
