Order a Replacement of Registration Documents (Stickers/Plates/Registration Card)
If you suddenly realize that you don’t have the license plate, stickers/tags, or registration card that you need to drive legally, then please don’t panic. We will provide you with the forms and assistance you need to file a request for DMV duplicates of your registration documents.
You can have the paperwork processed by us without having a long, stressful wait.
All applicants will need to file the Application for Replacement, Plates, Stickers, Documents (REG 156) form and should bring their DMV Letter, if applicable. Depending on the exact circumstances, other documents that may be needed include:
- Proof of Ownership
- California Driver’s License or ID
- Remaining Plates, Registration Card, etc.

The DMV will charge a fee of approximately $22, that if there are no fees pending. We will let you know if you need to pay any extra fees.
Proof of Ownership to get a DMV Duplicates
Now, we have established that there are some requirements to get a replacement or DMV duplicate of your tags, plates, registration, or title. One of those is proof of ownership. How can you prove that you are the owner of the vehicle? Maybe sometimes you can’t and that is why you need a duplicate, perhaps you do not have the title or the registration.
Any legitimate document that has the VIN of the vehicle and your name can be used as a proof of ownership. Could be the renewal letter, an old registration. If you do not have any of these, we can run a record of the vehicle.
And, in there we will be able to see to whose name the vehicle is registered to.
Driver’s License or ID to request a DMV Duplicates
Please note, that you can use any kind of ID, it does not need to be a California driver’s license. As long as the name on the document you use as proof of ownership matches the one on the ID, we can process your duplicate or replacement.
Said that, you must know that it must be an official ID with a picture; passport, out-of-state or foreign license, out-of-state or foreign ID, etc.
DMV Duplicate Plates $50 + DMV Fees
You do not actually get exact duplicates of your plates, your plate sequence will change. You get a replacement of your plates. If you believe someone stole your plates, you will have to report it to the police and bring in the report. We will gladly submit it along with the replacement!
Luckily, we have new plates at our office that have not been assigned to a vehicle yet. If you still have one of your plates or you need a replacement because the plates look too damaged, you must surrender your old plates. We will give your right away, new plates, new registration, and new stickers. If you wish a new title so that the plate number matches the one on the title, you have to request it separately.
DMV Duplicates of Title $50 + DMV Fees
For this one, you will also need a police report if someone stole it. It will take up to 30 days. We will submit the request and the DMV may take up to 30 days to process it and you will receive it in the mail to the last registered address.
Replacement month or year sticker or Registration $35 + DMV fees
These will also require a police report if they were stolen. We will give these to you right away.
